England have called up uncapped Sussex fast bowler Henry Crocombe as a stand-by for Ollie Robinson in the squad ahead of the second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. This came after Robinson had healthy knee soreness following a training session, which forced the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) to arrange a precautionary scan.

England had a 115-run win in the first Test at Lord’s, where Robinson returned to national colours following more than two years since his last appearance for England in Tests. The veteran pacer took seven wickets in the match including a five-wicket haul in New Zealand’s first innings and drew praise all round for his heroics.

With Robinson’s availability uncertain, England have called up 24-year-old Crocombe who has been excellent in county cricket for Sussex this season. Having picked up 21 first-class wickets, the right-arm pacer has recently played for England Lions and strengthened his case to represent on an international level.

The absence of regular captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson from contention ahead of the second Test on Thursday has already complicated England’s preparations. Jofra Archer and Jordan Cox are in the squad to replace them, with Joe Root likely still at the helm.

The selectors have also been forced to highlight Crocombe as a potential way forward, something which illustrates the growing England concern over their pace-bowling resources. Although the young prospect is yet to make his Test debut, he has made big strides in domestic cricket and this promotion marks a significant step forward.

The ECB, however, have said Robinson’s condition will assessed before further details are provided on the results of his scan. Until then Crocombe will bide her time as the England squad look to continue their charge towards a welcome series against New Zealand, leading 1-0 in a three-match contest. The second Test starts at The Oval on Wednesday, with the hosts looking to build on their win and close in on a series victory.
