In their Group B match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 against Sri Lanka, defending champions New Zealand on Tuesday won the toss and opted to bat at Rose Bowl in Southampton. Both sides retained the same playing XIs that helped them through the tournament.

New Zealand arrived at the tournament full of confidence after winning three warm-up matches, hoping to solidify their hold on second place in Group B. New Zealand White Ferns have an outstanding squad with captain Sophie Devine at the helm, alongside other experienced campaigners Amelia Kerr, Suzie Bates and wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze. Having bettered their title credentials in the recent past, many had expected another deep run for the Kiwis in this competition.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, were hoping to recover from a disastrous start in their campaign. Captain Chamari Athapaththu was the mainstay for this Asian side, which hoped its batting unit could step up to the challenge posed by one of the tournament favorites. One of the warm-up phase contenders, Sri Lanka looked good in that period but hardly managed to replicate it in the real event.

The surface at the Rose Bowl, as suggested, was expected to offer an even battle between bat and ball which would only give importance in a way to the toss. Jonathan Liew New Zealand have chosen to bat at the Sydney Cricket Ground in their 2015 World Cup semi-final against South Africa, suggesting they feel confident of setting a challenging total and then letting their strong bowling line-up build pressure during the chase.

The White Ferns reached 150 for their last win, with three overs to spare of their reply. In reply, Sri Lanka are in no hurry against a well-drilled New Zealand bowling line up but they have 329 to get.

Given the competitiveness of Group B, this fixture could be key to qualification for the knockout stages. A win for New Zealand would confirm them as one of the top two contenders in this tournament, but Sri Lanka needed a strong response from their campaign if they were to maintain any hopes of reaching the semi-finals.
