Having completed a weather-impacted ODI leg of the series, all eyes will now be on the shortest format as West Indies hosts Sri Lanka in the first T20I of a three-match series at Sabina Park, Kingston, meanwhile. This is an encounter between two teams who will not only be itching to hit the ground running but also a contest that promises no shortage of 6s and thrilling cricket.
Having won the ODI series in the Caribbean, Sri Lanka came into the T20I series with a lot of confidence. The visitors won the first ODI by 41 runs, with the other two rained out and England taking a 1-0 series victory. It gave Sri Lanka their first ODI series win in the Caribbean for more than 10 years, and carried with it, a mental advantage as the two sides moved on to face-off in three T20Is.
Opener Pathum Nissanka, one of the few bright spots for the visitors in white-ball cricket will once again be under scrutiny. While Sri Lanka’s bowling attack has shown T20 discipline, the batting unit has been more skilled.
The series is a chance for West Indies to reboot after their dismal ODI tour. The hosts have arguably the most destructive batting line-up in world cricket which features Rovman Powell, Shimron Hetmyer and Sherfane Rutherford. But that will only happen if the bowing attack can create regular chances.
Sabina Park has historically provided good bounce and carry, two aspects that should favor the positively-minded approach both teams take with the bat. There are big hitters on show and with the T20 format conducive towards aggressive cricket, expect a run-fest.
The three-match T20I series kicks-off in Kingston on June 12, with both sides determined to seize an early foothold. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will draw on the winning momentum from the ODI leg whereas West Indies will favour home conditions and their explosive batting arsenal to bring parity in the shortest format.
